
The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7, was only six miles deep.
It struck an area 166 miles east-southeast of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. The nearest city is Bhadarwah, India, some 11 miles away from the epicenter. The temblor could be felt in parts of Pakistan and India.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Powerful, shallow quakes are capable of causing extensive damage, the Reuters news agency points out.
