Mass stabbing at Pennsylvania high school injures 20

Twenty people were injured when a student at a Pittsburgh-area high school went on a stabbing rampage early on Wednesday, with four victims flown to area hospitals, officials said.

The suspected attacker, a 16-year-old student at the school, was in police custody, Dan Stevens, deputy emergency management coordinator for the Westmoreland County, told reporters.

The attacks took place in several classrooms and hallways as the school day commenced at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, 20 miles east of Pittsburgh, county emergency management officials said. The first 911 call was received at 7:13 a.m. EDT, they said.

Seven teenagers and one adult were admitted at the Forbes Regional Hospital, the hospital's director of trauma, Chris Kauffman, told reporters.

"These are significant injuries," Kauffman said, noting that two patients were undergoing surgery and a third was headed to the operating room.

"It's important that parents realize the scene is contained, the students that are here are safe," Stevens told reporters.

It wasn't clear how many students were stabbed and how many might have been injured while scrambling to get away from the attacker. The suspect was described as carrying two knives simultaneously during the attack.

The school district posted an emergency message on its website on Wednesday.

"A critical incident has occurred at the high school," the message said. "All elementary schools are canceled, the middle school and high school students are secure."

A long line of school buses was observed outside the school on Wednesday morning to take students to another elementary school nearby to be reunited with their families.

Governor speaks out

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett issued a statement on the stabbing Wednesday morning.

“I was shocked and saddened upon learning of the events that occurred this morning as students arrived at Franklin Regional High School," the statement said.  As a parent and grandparent, I can think of nothing more distressing than senseless violence against children. My heart and prayers go out to all the victims and their families.”

“I have directed the Pennsylvania State Police to assist local law enforcement in its investigation in any way possible.  Other state resources will be made available to the community, if needed.  I assure the citizens of Murrysville that they have the full support of my administration.”

Well, the way they make shows is, they make one show. That show's called a pilot. Then they show that show to the people who make shows, and on the strength of that one show they decide if they're going to make more shows.

Like you, I used to think the world was this great place where everybody lived by the same standards I did, then some kid with a nail showed me I was living in his world, a world where chaos rules not order, a world where righteousness is not rewarded. That's Cesar's world, and if you're not willing to play by his rules, then you're gonna have to pay the price.

You think water moves fast? You should see ice. It moves like it has a mind. Like it knows it killed the world once and got a taste for murder. After the avalanche, it took us a week to climb out. Now, I don't know exactly when we turned on each other, but I know that seven of us survived the slide... and only five made it out. Now we took an oath, that I'm breaking now. We said we'd say it was the snow that killed the other two, but it wasn't. Nature is lethal but it doesn't hold a candle to man.

You see? It's curious. Ted did figure it out - time travel. And when we get back, we gonna tell everyone. How it's possible, how it's done, what the dangers are. But then why fifty years in the future when the spacecraft encounters a black hole does the computer call it an 'unknown entry event'? Why don't they know? If they don't know, that means we never told anyone. And if we never told anyone it means we never made it back. Hence we die down here. Just as a matter of deductive logic.
